Boba, jelly, popping boba…. What’s the difference and what should I choose?
Here’s a rundown of the most popular add-ons
Boba- the classic add on that started it all. Made from tapioca starch, these gluten-free orbs are chewy and add the perfect texture to your milk tea. They are usually between 5mm and 8.5mm and have led to the development of the classic boba straws.
Popping Bubbles- filled with fruit juice, these bubbles pop in your mouth. If you’re looking for an extra splash of flavor or color to your tea, this would be the add-on for you. They come in flavors such as mango, strawberry, and passion fruit and are perfectly paired with fruit-flavored teas.
Jelly- This topping is made out of coconut, not gelatin, making them vegan-friendly as opposed to most jellies. Like the popping bubbles, they are usually fruit-flavored although the taste is not as strong. These are best paired with non-milk teas.
Red Bean- made with red beans and sugar, this topping adds a bit of sweetness to your tea. Less chewy than tapioca balls, the cooked and sugared beans add the perfect amount of texture to any tea.
Custard- also known as “egg pudding” is best paired with milk tea. Creamy and almost jelly-like, this add-on provides a smooth texture to the tea along with a sweet taste.
